Agoda vs Booking.com: which should you use for hotels?

November 5, 2026 · Herbert Kerkhoff · 6 min read

Agoda and Booking.com look like rivals, but the same company owns both. That surprises most people, and it does not mean the prices match: the same hotel can cost different amounts on each, and either one can be cheaper.

Short answer: in South-East Asia and Korea, check Agoda first. In Europe and the Americas, start with Booking.com. Anywhere else, search both and compare the final price of the same room, including taxes and the cancellation terms.

Why the same owner does not mean the same price

Booking Holdings owns both companies, and they run as separate brands with their own listings, promotions and customer support. A hotel's contract with one is not automatically the same as its contract with the other, so rates, room types and availability can differ.

That is why comparing them is worth two minutes even though they are related. It is also why a booking made on one cannot be changed through the other: your booking stays with the site you paid.

Where Agoda is usually the better starting point

Agoda's strength is Asia. D-Edge's 2025 figures put it ahead of Booking.com as the largest booking site in the region, with about 21% of the hotel bookings it tracks, and growing use in Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and Japan.

It is worth checking first when:

  • You are booking in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia or the Philippines.
  • You want smaller local hotels that serve regional travellers as well as international ones.
  • You are comfortable comparing the final total, because the first price you see may not be the one you pay.

Where Booking.com is usually the better starting point

Booking.com's stock is deepest in Europe, with around 4.4 million properties across 220+ countries overall.

It is worth starting with when:

  • You are booking in Europe or the Americas, down to small guesthouses in small towns.
  • You want free cancellation, which is easy to filter for and available on many rates.
  • You want a lot of reviews in English to judge a place you know nothing about.
  • You want a multi-country trip on one account, including places where Agoda has less choice.

How to compare them properly

  1. Choose the area first. On a short trip, location matters more than a small price difference. The hotel booking guide covers how to pick one.
  2. Shortlist two or three hotels, then search for those exact hotels on both sites.
  3. Go as far as the last step before paying on each site. Taxes and fees are where the headline prices stop being comparable.
  4. Match the room and the rate. Breakfast, bed type and free cancellation all change the price.
  5. Check the hotel's own website. Direct booking is sometimes the same price and easier to change.

If neither has what you want, try a third site. In mainland China and Japan that should be Trip.com, as the Trip.com vs Booking.com guide explains.

Common questions

Are Agoda and Booking.com the same company?

They have the same owner, Booking Holdings, but they operate as separate brands. Listings, prices, loyalty schemes and customer support are all separate, and a booking stays with the site you made it on.

Is Agoda cheaper than Booking.com?

Sometimes. Neither is cheapest every time, and comparison articles disagree because prices depend on the hotel, the dates and current promotions. The reliable test is the final price of the same room on both sites.

Is Agoda safe to book with?

Yes, it is a large, established booking site owned by a listed company. As with any booking site, problems tend to come from changes and refunds rather than from the booking itself, so read the cancellation terms before paying.

Should I use Agoda for hotels in Europe?

It is worth a price check, but start with Booking.com, which generally has more choice there.

Can I use both on one trip?

Yes. Use whichever is better for each stay. The only cost is keeping track of more than one confirmation.

Before you book
