Best Europe road trips 2026: five drives worth the time

A road trip is a different kind of trip from a city break. You trade museums and restaurants for landscape and distance, and the planning matters more, because a route only works if the daily driving is honest about how far you can actually get.

These five routes are the ones that consistently justify the effort. For each, the useful question is how many days it really takes, not how few you could do it in.

Iceland's Ring Road

Seven to ten days. Around 1,300 km.

Route 1 loops the island and passes most of what people come to Iceland for: waterfalls, black-sand beaches, glacier lagoons, fjords and small towns. Start and finish in Reykjavik.

Seven days is the honest minimum, and it means driving most days. Ten lets you stop properly and add Snæfellsnes in the west. Summer through early autumn gives long daylight and open services. Winter is for experienced drivers only, and most visitors are better served by a short southern loop or tours.

Much of the Ring Road itself is paved and fine in a standard car. The moment you turn onto side roads to reach a specific waterfall or valley, higher clearance starts to matter.

Scotland's North Coast 500

Five to seven days. Around 830 km.

A loop from Inverness around the northern Highlands: beaches that look Caribbean until you touch the water, cliffs, castles and distilleries. Five days covers it, seven lets you stop.

Late spring to early autumn is the window. Book accommodation early for summer, because the villages along the route have very few rooms and they go months ahead.

The single-track sections with passing places are the thing to understand before you go. The etiquette is straightforward once you know it, and frustrating for everyone when someone does not.

Germany's Romantic Road

Four to six days. Around 350 km.

Würzburg down to Füssen, through walled medieval towns, vineyards and countryside, finishing near Neuschwanstein. This is the gentlest drive on the list: short distances, good roads, no technical driving at all.

Late spring to early autumn is the obvious window, but Advent is a real alternative, when the towns run Christmas markets and the whole route takes on a different character.

Book Neuschwanstein ahead. Tickets are timed and sell out in season.

Norwegian fjords

Four to seven days.

There is no single fixed route. The usual shape links Ålesund or Åndalsnes to Geiranger, then south towards the Sognefjord and Flåm, using mountain passes and ferries. The scenery is arguably the best in Europe.

June to September is the practical season, when the high passes are open and ferries run to a full timetable. Check ferry schedules while planning rather than after, because they shape which overnight stops are possible.

Italy's Amalfi Coast

Four to seven days. Around 50 km of coast road.

The shortest drive here and the most demanding. Naples or Sorrento as a base, then Positano, Amalfi and Ravello along a cliffside road that is narrow, busy and often being negotiated by a bus coming the other way.

Spring and autumn are much better than summer, when traffic and parking become genuinely difficult. Many people base in one town and use buses and boats instead of driving daily, which is a reasonable answer here in a way it is not on the other routes.

How many days, side by side

• Ring Road: 7 to 10 days. A standard car covers the loop; 4x4 only for the side roads.
• North Coast 500: 5 to 7 days. Standard car, but keep the vehicle small for the single-track west.
• Romantic Road: 4 to 6 days. Standard car, no technical driving anywhere.
• Norwegian fjords: 4 to 7 days. Standard car, though the hairpins punish large motorhomes.
• Amalfi Coast: 4 to 7 days. Small car, or skip driving and use the buses and boats.

Planning the daily legs

The mistake on every one of these routes is the same: too much driving per day, planned from a map rather than from experience. Four hours behind the wheel plus stops is a full day, and it is less than the map suggests when the road is single-track or full of viewpoints you will want.
